With the installation of the first barn quilt block on the gable end of the Old Dominion Barn at Dusty’s Nursery in Ellensburg on Oct. 30, 2012, Washington became the 34th state in the country to join the national barn quilt movement. A short six months later, Barn Quilts of Kittitas County lays claim to 100-plus painted-wood quilt blocks on old and new barns, as well as other historic buildings, as part of the “First Barn Quilt Trail in Washington State”. BQKC is prepared for visitors with a downloadable, self-guided driving tour map on their website ( It directs interested tourists who are ‘on the trail’ for barn quilts, and provides the thread connecting the county’s rural and urban areas. BQKC will add more quilt blocks on barns, buildings and the map all the time. Look forward to BQKC’s last weekend in April quilt show and celebration at the Kittitas County Fairgrounds as an annual event.
